The somatic nervous system is also called the cerebrospinal nervous system. It connects the sensory receptors of the body to the central nervous system through sensory nerves and connects the central nervous system to rest of the body to process sensations and generate responses. The somatic nervous system contains sensory and motor nerves. Sensory nerves or afferent nerves conduct impulses from receptors in the peripheries of the body and transmit the information to the central nervous system. Motor or efferent nerves carry impulses from nerve centers, the brain and spinal cord, to effector organs. Nerves can consist solely of sensory fibers, motor fibers or a mixture of both termed mixed nerves (Farley et al., 2014) (Roca & Serrano, 1996) (Olesky, 2001) (Parker, 1997) (Walker & Wood, 2003).
